TSX rises 0.54 percent to 16,471.29

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX rose 89.09 points, or 0.54 percent, to 16,471.29.

Leading the index were Eldorado Gold Corp , up 7.6 percent, Cascades Inc , up 7 percent, and Canfor Corp , higher by 5.2 percent.

Lagging shares were Crescent Point Energy Corp , down 6.7 percent, Ensign Energy Services Inc, down 4.0 percent, and Gran Tierra Energy Inc, lower by 3.9 percent.

On the TSX 143 issues rose and 88 fell as a 1.6-to-1 ratio favored advancers. There were 7 new highs and 7 new lows, with total volume of 183.4 million shares.

The most heavily traded shares by volume were Encana Corp , Barrick Gold Corp and Manulife Financial Corp.

The TSX's energy group fell 1.81 points, or 1.3 percent, while the financials sector climbed 2.62 points, or 0.9 percent.

West Texas Intermediate crude futures fell 4.62 percent, or $2.73, to $56.36 a barrel. Brent crude fell 3.81 percent, or $2.48, to $62.58 [O/R]

The TSX is up 15 percent for the year.
