Tuesday’s boys’ high school basketball rewind: No Sir, no problem for Myers Park

Myers Park High’s boys’ basketball team — still playing without top 100 national recruit Sir Mohammed due to a shoulder injury — won 63-61 over Chambers on Tuesday night behind preseason All-Observer guard Bishop Boswell’s 23-point performance.

Myers Park is No. 1 in this week’s Charlotte Observer Sweet 16 poll. Chambers, playing in front of a big crowd at home, is No. 6.

“We knew coming over here was going to be tough,” Mustangs coach Scott Taylor said. “It’s their first home game. It is never easy coming in here. They are physical and mentally tough. They make you really work for anything and everything. The last two years when we played them, we turned the ball over more than probably anybody we’ve played.”

Taylor felt that the Cougars’ pressure made it difficult for his team to get into its normal offensive sets. Myers Park’s problems became more pronounced in the third quarter when 6-9 forward Sadiq White had to go to the bench with foul trouble. Without White on the floor, the Cougars were able to generate some turnovers that led to run outs.

But just when Chambers caught Myers Park and seemed ready to gain a serious advantage, Boswell stepped up.

“We did good in the beginning,” Boswell said. “But, we knew (Chambers) were going to come back. Coach (Taylor) told me to go take over and I just knew I had to be there for my guys and be the leader. I couldn’t let the emotions get the best of me in that situation.”

Taylor had a of praise for Boswell, a 6-3 guard signed to Tennessee.

“We are asking (Boswell) to do a lot right now,” Taylor said. “Obviously he is taking on a lot more of the ball handling and decision-making when Sir (Mohammed) isn’t in there. We’ve got some new good players, but they are new and young and haven’t really played, so we are asking (Boswell) to carry a lot of it. It really takes a toll.”

In the fourth quarter, Boswell seemed to find his flow, hitting a clutch layup and connecting on all of his free throws in the quarter. His play, and White’s return, helped Myers Park keep just enough space between Chambers and its No. 1 ranking.

“Sometimes it is a little harder to find his flow in the offense,” Taylor said. “He felt the urgency to at least put some pressure on the rim tonight and got to the free-throw line a bunch. Then he made a heck of a play to finish one at the rim to give us the lead and finish it out.”

▪ The Mustangs won’t get much rest after the win. They’ll play the No. 5 ranked team in MaxPreps national poll Friday, Virginia’s John Marshall, at the Good Guys vs. Cancer Basketball Showcase in the Outer Banks.

Taylor is hoping Mohammed, a 6-6 guard signed to Notre Dame, is ready soon.

“(Mohammed) is starting to do some things,” Taylor said. “But, it is kind of a day-to-day thing just seeing how he responds and how he feels.”

“John Marshall plays hard,” Taylor added. “They play really hard. They had an unbelievable year last year. They return a lot of guys that have been through that. We both know what it is like to play in those environments where it is like a championship-level game. So, it will be a huge test.”

Three who made a difference

Bishop Boswell, Myers Park: The Mustangs needed every one of Boswell’s 23 points. His leadership late in the fourth quarter gave the Mustangs the edge they needed to pull off the win. He hit a reverse layup late in the game to give Myers Park the lead back after the Cougars had just taken it.

Marcus Kerr, Chambers: Kerr had 17 points for the Cougars, seven coming in the fourth quarter. A big-time 3-point basket in the fourth quarter helped the Cougars regain the lead late before Boswell hit his reverse layup. He has been a key addition for the Cougars after transferring from West Charlotte.

Sadiq White, Myers Park: White finished with 19 points, including 10 in the first quarter. Despite the foul trouble, he still finished with the second-most points on the team and hit a free throw in the closing seconds to give his team its final margin.

What’s next?

Chambers will face Caldwell Academy out of Greensboro on Dec. 12 at 6 p.m. Myers Park will face John Marshall out of Virginia in a battle of top 10 nationally ranked teams at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
