Update: Victim of fatal gunfire identified by Fresno police. Second victim in hospital

Detectives were investigating Thursday after the shooting of two men ended in the death of one in central Fresno, according to police.

The gun violence happened about 2 a.m. on Fresno Street north of Belmont Avenue not far from the Highway 180 overpass, according to Sgt. Diana Trueba Vega.

The victims were with several other people outside a liquor store on Fresno Street around closing time, police said.

“I can tell you that the entire incident is captured on video,” Lt. Paul Cervantes said. “I can tell you that the video depicts at least two individuals involved in some kind of verbal disturbance.”

First responders arrived to find the victims with gunshot wounds, police said. Both were taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where one died.

Police identified 45-year-old Nathaniel Castaneda around 10:20 a.m. as the victim killed Thursday.

The other, a 33-year-old man, was in critical but stable condition as of noon, Cervantes said. He was treated for a single wound to the upper body.

He was found on White Avenue about six houses down from the liquor store, police said.

The victims knew each other, and police were looking for others who were at the scene when shots rang out, he said. Officers recovered one firearm believed to have been discarded after it was used in the shooting.

Fresno Street between Belmont and Thomas avenues was blocked off by investigators. Police were seeking witnesses and surveillance video.

The violence marked the eighth intentional homicide so far the year, which compares to 19 at the same time last year, according to police.
