"Ooh, dark," said Alyssa Farah Griffin, who used to work for Pence and Trump.

Joy Behar kicked off The View on an admittedly grim note — and this time it wasn't to issue a projection about World War III.

The 81-year-old comedian launched into Friday's Hot Topics discussion about Donald Trump's potential vice presidential candidates with a joke about the former president's supporters calling for ex-VP Mike Pence's public hanging amid the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection.

"In between court appearances this weekend, Trump is holding a retreat to audition his potential picks for vice president. Here's who made the short list to potentially take Mike Pence's place in the noose," Behar quipped, prompting panelist Alyssa Farah Griffin — who worked under both Pence and Trump earlier in her political career — to exclaim, "Ooh, dark!"

Behar also noted that she may have taken things a bit too far while the audience laughed.

"That was a little dark," she said. "I admit."

Griffin, who resigned from Trump's communications team in 2020 and subsequently spoke out against him, said she's "fearful of" some of Trump's potential VP picks — including Marco Rubio, who she said engaged in "flip-flopping" behavior after staunchly opposing Trump throughout the prior election cycle.

"What Trump is going to be looking for is four things. Someone who can raise money. As he's behind in the money trail, he needs somebody who can go out and do that. Someone who is a great surrogate, so when he's sitting freezing in a courtroom, he can have somebody criss-crossing swing states and out campaigning for him," Griffin assessed. "But also, they've basically given up on making inroads with female voters beyond what they already have, so they're looking at the numbers that they could pick up with Black men and Latino men, and they have some data to suggest that they can make improvements, so Marco Rubio could potentially be helpful there. Then I think they need someone who seems mainstream and like an adult in the room, and Marco Rubio is loved by Republicans."

Ana Navarro, a Florida Republican, countered Griffin's assessment, noting that Rubio's standing with some Floridian voters might help Trump in that state, but that Latino voters at large would oppose Rubio's politics.

Sunny Hostin, the show's legal expert, also called South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem — one of Trump's suspected VP candidates — a "puppy murderer" in her assessment of the picks, after Noem revealed in a new book that she once shot her pet dog.
