Virtually Tour Windsor Castle and Other Royal Residences
As countries around the world impose lockdowns, airlines cancel flights, and our homes become our hotel rooms, tourist attractions are opening their doors for virtual tours. Even Harry Potter at Universal has posted a virtual ride. Now the Royal family has opened their homes to immersive digital tours including some of their most famous residences. Here's every Royal home open to virtual tourists:
Buckingham Palace
The center of the royal households, Buckingham Palace is the headquarters and administrative hub for the royal family. All royal announcements are posted on the exterior gates and the balcony has served as a national greeting point since 1851.
The Buckingham Palace virtual tour, available on the Royal Family's website, features the White Room (where Christmas broadcasts are recorded), the Grand Staircase, and the Throne Room.
Windsor Castle
This 900-year-old fortress still functions as one of the Queen's private homes. The castle opens for Easter court between March and April and holds MBE and OBE Investitures throughout the year. The grounds also include St. George's Chapel, which you may recognize from Prince Harry's wedding to Meghan Markle. The chapel was also the site of the prayer service for The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall's marriage and the burial place of The Queen Mother, King George VI and Princess Margaret.
The virtual tour, available on the Royal website, even offers a sneak peek of the State Banquet at St. George's Hall, set for a state dinner.
The Palace of Holyroodhouse
The Queen's official Scottish residence, not to be confused with her private Scottish home, Sandringham Estate, is the reception space for all events related to the Scottish people. The Edinburgh home hosts state visits, investiture ceremonies, and garden parties for a week during the summer. The palace served as the primary residence of the King and Queen of Scots until the 16th century and remains open to the public for Scottish events while the Queen is not in residence.
Available on the Royal website, the tour includes the Morning Drawing Room, the King's Bedchamber (with original fabrics) and the Great Stair.
