This week’s nominees

Kola Abudu, Mountain Island Charter basketball: The 6-foot-1 senior scored 10 points, including the game-winning basket, to go with two rebounds, six steals and one block in a 58-56 win at Uwharrie Charter Nov. 28.

Abudu also had 11 points, seven rebounds and three steals in an 83-57 victory over Union Academy Nov. 29.

Abudu finished off the week with six points and eight rebounds in an 88-79 win at Queens Grant Dec. 1.

Abudu is averaging eight points, four rebounds and four steals per game for Mountain Island Charter (4-0) through Sunday.

Tim Brown, Hough indoor track: The Huskies’ senior ran a personal and school-record 1:04.29 to win the 500-meter dash at the Cold Turkey Invitational at Marvin Ridge Dec. 2.

Brown, who also ran on the winning 1,600-meter relay team, led Hough to a fourth-place finish at Marvin Ridge.

Caden Caskey, Ardrey Kell basketball: The 6-2 senior scored 27 points, including 26 points in the second half in a 71-60 loss to Charlotte Catholic, Nov. 28. He made six 3-point shots in the second half.

Caskey also had 10 points, while nursing a sore ankle, in a 75-39 win over Comenius Dec. 1. He finished off his week with 28 points, including five three-pointers, in a 65-51 win over Christ the King Dec. 2.

Caskey is averaging 22 points per game for Ardrey Kell (3-3) through Sunday.

Jalen Chambers, Mooresville basketball: The 6-3 senior scored 24 points, had five assists, four rebounds and seven steals in a 76-73 win over Northwest Cabarrus Nov. 28.

Alim Coleman, Hickory Ridge indoor track: The Ragin’ Bulls’ senior ran a 10:40.66 to finish as runner-up in the 3,200-meter run at the Cold Turkey Invitational at Marvin Ridge Dec. 2.

Coleman also ran a 4:56.45 to finish seventh in the 1,600 meters at the same meet.

Jordan Gonder, Northwest Cabarrus basketball: The 6-4 senior averaged 21 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.3 assists in four games last week. Northwest Cabarrus was 3-1 in those games.

Gonder scored 26 points, seven rebounds and three assists in a 76-73 loss at Mooresville Nov. 28. The next night, he had 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists in a 60-40 victory at Mount Pleasant.

Gonder scored 16 points, including the 1,000th point on his high school career, to go with six rebounds and three assists in an 85-36 win at South Rowan Dec. 1.

Gonder finished off the week with 15 points, six rebounds and two assists in a 81-42 win over Mount Pleasant.

Northwest Cabarrus is 4-1 overall through Sunday.

Ahmari Hicks, East Mecklenburg basketball: The 6-2 junior scored 15 points, had two rebounds, two assists and two steals in a 52-45 win at Sun Valley Dec. 1.

Hicks is averaging 20 points, three assists and 2.5 rebounds, while making 16 three-pointers and shooting 55 percent from the field for East Mecklenburg (4-1, through Sunday).

Makoi Mabor Marier, Gaston Christian basketball: The 6-11 senior scored 24 points, grabbed 14 rebounds to go with seven blocks, five assists and one steal in an 85-66 win over Northside Christian Nov. 28.

Mabor Marier also had 27 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks in three quarters of play in an 85-60 victory at Hickory Grove Dec. 1.

Gavin McCarter, Marvin Ridge swimming: The Mavericks’ senior won the 100 freestyle (49.96) and finished fourth in the 100 backstroke as the Marvin Ridge beat both Weddington and Piedmont at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center (MAC) Nov. 30.

McCarter, who had regional qualifying times in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke at the same meet, already has regional cuts in the 100 breaststroke and 100 butterfly this season.

McCarter is a UNC Wilmington signee.

Peter Moye, South Mecklenburg basketball: The 6-3 senior scored 21 points in a 62-46 win at Cuthbertson Nov. 28. Moye also scored 17 in a 56-54 victory at Independence Nov. 30.

Moye is averaging 23.3 points per game for South Mecklenburg (4-0, through Sunday).

Miles Leaks, Piedmont basketball: The 6-foot junior point guard scored 27 points in a 58-54 win over Central Pageland (SC) Nov. 29.

Leaks also scored 21 points in a 56-44 loss at Butler Nov. 28.

Leaks is averaging 23.7 points per game for Piedmont (2-1, through Sunday).

Braden Wilkie, Lake Norman Charter basketball: The 6-3 junior scored 19 points and had two rebounds in a 62-52 win over Hough Nov. 28.

Wilkie also scored 18 points and had two rebounds and one steal in a 75-71 loss at West Rowan Dec. 1.

Wilkie is averaging 12.5 points per game for Lake Norman Charter (2-2, through Sunday).
