Poll results: Gibault junior BND Baseball Player of the Week in southwestern Illinois​

Brady Biffar of Gibault Catholic High School is the winner of this week’s Belleville News-Democrat Baseball Player of the Week high school poll, as selected by readers of bnd.com.

In recent action, Biffar, a junior pitcher, posted 7 strikeouts in a 8-4 loss against Wesclin and then had 1 hit and 2 RBI in a 9-7 win over Trico.

Biffar, who secured 49% of the votes to edge out Belleville East’s Nolan Seneczyn (43%), entered the weekend with 1 win and a 3.71 earned run average to go along with 15 RBI and 16 runs scored.

Here were the other candidates for the week of April 17-22:

  • Joseph Chiarodo, Edwardsville High School, sophomore, OF. Chiarodo notched 6 strikeouts in a 12-0 win against Collinsville and also had 3 hits and 3 RBI in a 7-6 loss against McCracken County.

  • Hank Gomric, Althoff Catholic High School, junior, OF/P. During action last week, Gomric went 8-for-12 with 2 doubles and 2 runs scored.

  • Luke Issacs, Freeburg High School, senior, 2B. Issacs had 2 hits and 2 RBI in a 9-5 win over Roxana. Issacs also had 2 hits and 2 RBI in a 9-4 victory against Mater Dei.

  • Pat Mendiola, Belleville East High School, senior, INF. Mendiola had 1 HR and 6 RBI in a 15-0 victory over Alton. He also had 2 hits and 2 RBI in a 10-0 win against Carbondale.

  • Jake Ottensmeier, Highland High School, junior, OF. Ottensmeier had 2 hits and 1 RBI in a 4-3 loss to Waterloo. He then had 3 hits and 3 runs in an 11-1 victory against Alton.

  • Nolan Seneczyn, Belleville East High School, senior, INF. Seneczyn led the offense for the Lancers’ 5-0 week by going 9-for-17 with 2 doubles, 6 stolen bases and 7 RBI.

  • Bryce Reese, Waterloo High School, senior, C. Reese went 6-for-11 with 7 RBI and a home run last week. His 2-run homer against Highland tied the score at 2-2 in the 5th inning and helped spark Waterloo to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory.

  • Wil Harris, Mater Dei Catholic High School, sophomore, INF. Harris batted .438 last week while posting 8 RBI and scoring 5 runs. He also hit a walk-off double that lifted the Knights to an 11-10 win against Althoff.
