Is wetter-than-normal September going to extend into October? Here’s a look at the week ahead

October is off to a cloudy and wet start, following one of the rainiest Septembers in decades in Western Washington.

But the fall weather will be on hiatus later this week when temperatures will rise to the mid 70s through the weekend.

According to U.S. Climate Data, 2.2 inches of rain fell in Olympia in September, while the average is typically 1.7 inches. Kayla Mazurkiewicz, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Seattle, said rainy weather isn’t atypical for this time of year, but folks may recall how long the summer of 2022 felt. Last September and early October were unseasonably warm, she said, with less rain and more fire-causing conditions.

Mazurkiewicz said spurts of warm conditions are normal for October, but the warm period will be shorter this year, largely due to September’s cool rain.

However, the current rain front is weakening, she said, and will start to move out on Tuesday, with clouds lingering into the night and leaving by Wednesday.

The high on Thursday in Olympia is forecast to be 72 degrees, with a low of 49 degrees. Friday will be sunny with a high of 75 degrees and a low of 50 degrees. Saturday’s high is forecast to be 77 degrees.
