Here’s where you can find cooling sites in the metro-east during sweltering heat wave

With sweltering temperatures engulfing the metro-east, Belleville and other cities are taking action to help residents and visitors alike escape the heat.

The entire region currently is under an excessive heat warning that extends until 9 p.m. Friday with heat index values expected to reach between 105-114 degrees. Temperatures are projected to hit 102 degrees Thursday and 101 degrees Friday.

According to the city’s website, these cooling sites operate in Belleville once the National Weather Service issues an excessive heat advisory or warning. Watch for the “open today” sign at participating cooling sites.

Individuals who are unhoused, don’t have air conditioning at home or are simply caught out and about can utilize one of these locations.

Here are the sites in Belleville, according to the city’s website, with the hours the buildings are publicly open:

  • Belleville Public Library, Main Branch: 121 E. Washington St., 618-234-0441. This siute is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday-Saturday.

  • Belleville Public Library West Branch: 3414 W. Main St., 618-233-4366. This site is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.
