Whitehorse installs 'take a bag, leave a bag' dispensers near trails

Back in the days of the penny there used to be "take a penny, leave a penny" bowls in stores; now the City of Whitehorse is trying the same idea with plastic bags.

Marc Boulerice, parks supervisor, says the city's installed seven dispensers near garbage cans in the Porter Creek neighbourhood. The hollow plastic tubes provide a place to stash plastic bags.

"We think there's enough people with a bunch of bags at home to keep these stocked," he says.

Jeff Marynowski of the Porter Creek Community Association says it's helping dog owners.

"It has cleaned up the trail," he said. "People have been using it and it has cleaned up our greenspace and recreational areas."

The City of Whitehorse is planning to build more stations and install them near trails.

Boulerice says the idea of a "take a bag, leave a bag" stations comes from Kelowna, B.C.
