How the Texas Rangers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1 in Game 3 of World Series

In a game when two of their biggest stars exited with injuries, the Texas Rangers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1 in the third game of the World Series on Monday at Chase Field.

Starting pitcher Max Scherzer exited after three innings because of back tightness, then right fielder Adolis Garcia exited after the seventh inning with left side tightness.

The Rangers lead the best-of-seven series 2-1. Game 4 is on Wednesday at Chase Field. FIrst pitch is at 7:03 p.m. (FOX).

First inning

TEXAS: Arizona pitcher Brandon Pfaadt, makes his 24th career start. Marcus Semien pops to left for the first round. Corey Seager grounds out. Adolis Garcia flies out to center.

ARIZONA: Corbin Carroll leads grounds out to short, Ketel Marte walks, then Gabriel Moreno grounds into double play. Quick 12-pitch inning. TIED 0-0 AFTER 1.

Second inning

TEXAS: Evan Carter opens the inning with a single to right., but is wiped out on Mitch Garver’s double play grounder back to the pitcher. Jonah Heim flies out to center. Pfaadt is through two innings on just 18 pitches.

ARIZONA: Christian Walker leads off with a double. Tommy Pham follows with a single to right, however Adolis Garcia throws Walker out at the plate for the first out of the inning. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. pops out to second and Alek Thomas grounds out on a ball that deflects off Scherzer. Josh Jung picks up the ball and throws Thomas out to end the inning. Scherzer’s thrown just 20 pitches through two.

Third inning

TEXAS: Nathaniel Lowe doubles to center on a full count. Josh Jung strikes out, Leody Taveras grounds out to second. With Lowe now on third base, Marcus Semien singles to left-center, scoring Lowe for a 1-0 Rangers lead. Corey Seager then homers to right on the next pitch, 3-0 Rangers. Adolis Garcia strikes out, but Rangers lead 3-0.

ARIZONA: Evan Longoria strikes out, Geraldo Perdomo flies out to right, Corbin Carroll walks. With two outs and Corbin on first base, Ketel Marte flies out to left. RANGERS LEAD 3-0 AFTER THREE.

Fourth inning

TEXAS: Evan Carter grounds out to second, Mitch Garver strikes out, Jonah Heim flies out.

SCHERZER OUT: Max Scherzer is pulled before the bottom of the fourth inning because of tightness in his back. He shuut out the Diamondbacks over the first three innings. Jon Gray is relieving Scherzer.

ARIZONA: Gabriel Moreno strikes out, Christian Walker grounds out to third, Tommy Pham flies out to center. Impressive relief outing for Gray. RANGERS LEAD 4-0 after 4.

Fifth inning

TEXAS: Nathaniel Lowe walks, Josh Jung strikes out, Leody Taveras lines out to third, Marcus Semien grounds out. HALFWAY THROUGH, RANGERS AHEAD 3-0

ARIZONA: Lourdes Gurriel Jr. grounds out to third, Alek Thomas grounds out to the pitcher, Evan Longoria pops out to first. SIx up, six out for Jon Gray.

Sixth inning

TEXAS: Corey Seager flies out to center, Adolis Garcia walks. And that’s it for Brandon Pfaadt. Miguel Castro is coming in relief. Evan Carter greets Castro with a single to left, moving Garcia to second. With two on, Mitch Garver flies out to center, Jonah Heim grounds out. Diamondbacks escaped two-on, one-out threat. RANGERS LEAD 3-0.

ARIZONA: Geraldo Perdomo strikes out, Corbin Carroll strikes out, Ketel Marte singles to right fielld (off Marcus Semien’s glove), then Gabriel Moreno flies out to left for the final out. Headed to the late innings, RANGERS LEAD 3-0.

Seventh inning

TEXAS: Kyle Nelson relieves Castro. Nathaniel Lowe flies out to left, Josh Jung grounds out to shortstop, Leody Taveras grounds out to third.

ARIZONA: Josh Sborz replaces Jon Gray on mound. If Rangers hold on Gray’s the star (three shoutout innings, allowing just one hit). Christian Walker grounds out, Tommy Pham then doubles to center. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. strikes out. With two outs and Pham on second, Alek Thomas strikes out on a full count. RANGERS REMAIN AHEAD 3-0

Eighth inning

TEXAS: Luis Frias enters as the new Diamondbacks pitcher. Marcus Semien grounds out to second. Corey seager strikes out, Adolis Garcia flies out to center. Garcia holds his back running to first.

GARCIA UPDATE: Travis Jankowski replaces Garcia in right field.

ARIZONA: Pinch-hitter Pavin Smith enters, thus Aroldis Chapman comes in to pitch for the Rangers. So, Emmanuel RIvera hits for Smith. Rivera doubls down the right field line. Geraldo Perdomo singles to left, scoring Rivera, cutting Rangers lead to 3-1. Corbin Carroll stikes out for second out, then Ketel Marte grounds into a double play to end the threat. RANGERS 3, DIAMONDBACKS 1

Ninth inning

TEXAS: Evan Carter walks, Mitch Garver flies out to deep center. Jonah Heim strikes out. Andrew Saalfrank comes in to pitch for Arizona. He induces Lowe into an inning-ending ground out.

ARIZONA: Closer Jose Leclerc enters the game for the Rangers. Gabriel Moreno grounds out to third. Christian Walker strikes out. Tommy Pham strikes out. RANGERS WIN 3-0

Open roof

The roof will be open at Chase Field for Game 3 on Monday night. The Diamondbacks are 16-8 with the roof open this season. Game scoring averages increase by an average of one run per game when the roof is open.

Rangers tweak lineups

Rookie Evan Carter has been moved up the cleanup spot. What a crazy 60 days for the rookie.
