You tell us: Will the fervor over New Balance last?

Like an unassuming pedestrian in a dog park, the New Balance shoe company has really stepped in it.

Since the election, the Boston-based company has been fending off accusations it is pro-Trump, and by extension that it condones the U.S. president-elect’s divisive rhetoric and policy proposals.

It started Nov. 9 when one of New Balance’s executives suggested the election results could work in the shoemaker’s favour.

A Wall Street Journal reporter quoted the company’s vice-president of public affairs’ optimism that a Trump administration may quash the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal, a trade deal that the company viewed as potentially damaging for its locally-made business model.

This kicked off a wave of anger with people who view a Trump presidency as a dark and dangerous step for America. Some even took to burning their sneakers to drive the point home.

New Balance has tried to fend off the resulting fervor with a statement on its strictly pro-USA, anti-bigotry stance.

But then along came the Neo-Nazis.

Pleased with Trump’s perceived alignment with their ideals, white nationalist publication the Daily Stormer declared New Balance “the official shoes of white people.”

Other shoe companies have tried to capitalize on the hubub, with Reebok offering new shoes to angry former New Balance owners.

So here we are. “Not the shoe of white nationalists, we swear” isn’t exactly the new “Just Do It,” but it’s a motto the shoemaker might want to consider for a little while.

And though the social media backlash was very real, and very swift, we want to hear from you:
