“Abbott Elementary”'s Sheryl Lee Ralph braces for Hurricane Beryl in Jamaica: 'Pray for us'

"I hope you've put oil in your lamp and are taking extra care."

Sheryl Lee Ralph is urging others living in Jamaica to be cautious as Hurricane Beryl makes its way through the Caribbean.

The Abbott Elementary star discussed preparations for the category 4 storm in a video posted on X (formerly Twitter) early Wednesday morning. Beryl is expected to “bring hurricane conditions to Jamaica by mid-day today with life-threatening winds and storm surge,” the U.S. National Hurricane Center reports.

“From the looks of the sky, it looks like Beryl is gonna be here much sooner than the news keeps saying,” Ralph said in the clip. “It’s very calm here in Jamaica. The sky is so beautifully clear and they said that the sea looked like glass today.”

The actress also highlighted some of the preventative measures she’s taken to stay safe.

“We had to take in all of the outside furniture because, you know, those things take flight," Ralph explained. “I just wanted to say to everybody: please stay inside. There’s a curfew starting at 6 a.m. tomorrow morning. Stay off the road in Kingston. I hope you've put oil in your lamp and are taking extra care."

She continued, “To everybody that’s here, on island, we remember that Gilbert was a [category] three, and Beryl is a four. Wow. God bless you. Goodnight. Power up.” (Ralph is referring to Hurricane Gilbert, a powerful storm that affected much of the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico in 1988.)

Ralph captioned her post: “Good night from Jamaica. Pray for us as you pray for others.”

A hurricane warning is in effect for Jamaica and the Cayman Islands as of Wednesday morning.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center reports that Hurricane Beryl is “forecast to be at or near major hurricane intensity while it passes near Jamaica later today,” noting that winds are expected to reach “tropical storm strength” and that “storm surge could raise water levels by as much as 6 to 9 feet above normal tide levels along the immediate coast of Jamaica.”
