Anne Hathaway has been in the spotlight since she was 19. But despite spending decades in the public eye, the Oscar-winning actress has managed to shield her family life from the media.

"I’m on a team," she told PORTER in 2023. "It’s my family, and it’s not just about me." While she may have been referring to her sons, Jack and Jonathan, and her husband, Adam Shulman, her two brothers are also part of that close-knit crew that Anne holds dear.

After Kate McCauley Hathaway, an actress, and Gerald Hathaway, an attorney, tied the knot on Dec. 27, 1980, they gave birth to their first son, Micheal.

Anne — who revealed that her real name is Annie during a 2021 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon was born on Nov. 12, 1982. She was then followed by her younger brother, Thomas Hathaway.

Here's everything to know about  Anne Hathaway's brothers, Michael and Thomas Hathaway.

They grew up in New Jersey

While the Hathaways started their family in New York City, Gerald and Katy didn’t raise their three kids there. According to TapInto.net, they relocated to New Jersey when Anne was 6.

In a 2011 interview with Chelsea Handler for Interview magazine, the Devil Wears Prada actress said she was grateful for growing up outside of the city.

"My feeling about growing up in New Jersey was, 'How come I’m not in New York?' " she said. "That being said, I’m older and I have a better worldview now, and so I think I grew up in an incredibly privileged position. The town I grew up in is beautiful. I got a great education, and I’m very grateful for it. But it’s not a place I wanted to stay."

Their parents supported their passions

Anne told GQ in 2016 that creativity was encouraged in the Hathaway household. Their mother was an actress and a singer who unknowingly played her daughter's future award-winning role of Fantine in a touring production of Les Misérables. Anne was inspired by her mother’s work onstage.

"I would walk around singing all day, doing scenes, pretending all day long," the actress said. "My two brothers loved that. My parents never said, 'Pipe down!' or, 'Quit that racket!' "

Michael and Thomas' childhood passions were just as encouraged. In a 2018 Instagram post, Anne wrote that their father coached all three of his kids' soccer teams despite having to commute an hour and a half to work every day.

The family supported Michael when he came out

During a speech at a Human Rights Campaign dinner in 2008, Anne said she grew up in a family where "being gay was and is no big deal." So when Michael came out, he was accepted with open arms.

Their family even left Catholicism because of its lack of acceptance towards the LGBTQ community.

"The whole family converted to episcopalianism after my elder brother came out," the actress later told GQ. "Why should I support an organization that has a limited view of my beloved brother?"

Thomas works in licensing

Thomas has spent his career mostly in licensing, according to his LinkedIn profile. After graduating from Sarah Lawrence College with a bachelor’s degree in cultural studies, he worked as a sales representative for a beverage wholesaler before transferring to EasySong, a music licensing company in Minnesota.

According to the company's website, Thomas shares a shih tzu named Beric and a Norwegian forest cat named Puck with his wife, Shelby Hathaway. He also plays bass and likes to swim.

Michael once worked as Anne's assistant

In a 2007 interview with Harper's Bazaar, Anne said that her older brother was working as her assistant at the time. Though she said she relied a lot on her assistants, she didn't anticipate it to be a long-term gig for Michael.

"He's a writer," she said. "It's understandable you wouldn't want to be someone's assistant forever; you want to realize your own dreams."

Their mom sang at Michael's wedding

Michael married his long-time boyfriend, Joshua Lawson, in 2006. Two years later, Anne told Modern Bride that the ceremony was beautiful.

"At one point, he and his husband were standing up there, and my mom got up to sing," she said. "She was just beaming straight love into them, and everyone felt it, and it was just this really beautiful moment."

Anne joked about looking like her brother

Anne did a lot to prepare for her role on Les Misérables — including cutting her hair short. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress joked after a 2012 screening of the film that the haircut made her look eerily like one of her family members.

"When I eventually looked in the mirror I just thought I looked like my gay brother,” she told the audience.
