The best part of Tri-Cities high school track and field season is just beginning. Who will lead?

After two solid months of practice and meets, we’re about to embark on the best three weeks of high school track and field: the post season.

Almost all local conferences have sub-district or league championship meets this coming weekend.

The following weekend, May 19-20, will feature district or regional meets.

The month will be capped with the state high school championship meets May 25-27, with the Class 4A, 3A and 2A meet in Tacoma; and the 1A, 2B and 1B meet in Yakima.

Using the website Athletic.net, I combed through times and marks to determine who the Mid-Columbia’s leading athletes are going into the postseason.

I came up with a few conclusions:

There is a reason that Walla Walla’s boys and Kamiakin’s girls were Mid-Columbia Conference regular season champions, with both teams going 8-0 in dual meets.

Wa-Hi was led by Jake Hisaw (area leader in 200 meters and 300 hurdles) and Brody Hartley (1600 and 3200).

Kamiakin had Adelyn Mitchell (100 meters), it’s 4x100 relay team, and Aubrey Herrin (triple jump) leading the way.

Until someone beats him, Chiawana senior Kade Smith has to be the guy in the jumps (triple and long), not just in our region, but at state. Smith is the defending Class 4A state champion in the triple jump.

What is it about Richland High pole vaulters? They’re always at the top of the Mid-Columbia mark charts. This year is no different. Elijah Lynch leads the boys, the Bombers have two in the top five boys, while four Richland girls among the leaders.

This area had plenty of talent among the smaller schools. Wahluke’s Brayan Calvario (boys high jump), Connell’s Cade Clyde (boys shot put), River View’s Aliyah Malone (girls high jump), and Connell’s Kellen Riner (boys javelin) lead their respective events in the region.

Now, the girls leaders are spread out among numerous area athletes.

But only one, DeSales senior Morgan Thomas, is a double leader: girls discus and shot put.

So, heading into the first weekend of post-season competition, here are this region’s leaders in high school track and field:
