It’s certainly not unheard of for a shark to attack an unknown visitor poking around their habitat.

Diver Jason Dimitri can attest to this experience after he fought off a shark who clearly did not enjoy his presence in the western Caribbean Sea last week.

Dimitri was about 70 feet deep when he was hunting lionfish, a highly venomous fish that is invading the area. Clearly the shark had a problem with Dimitri being there because it went nuts, Sharknado style.

The shark charged him immediately after he speared one of the lionfish and he didn’t stop there.

Dimitri caught the entire attack on video.

After the initial charge at Dimitri, the shark continued to circle him. It was clear he was not happy. If you listen closely, you can actually hear Dimitri scream underwater when he first encounters the shark.

Dimitri astonishingly keeps his cool and continues to fight off the angered shark with only his spear, keeping a close watch on his every move.

The video slows the encounter down so you can see exactly how persistent the shark becomes. Don’t forget, all of this is happening underwater, so screaming for help is not a viable option.

If it wasn’t for Dimitri’s ability to keep calm, things may have turned out differently. With all of his limbs still intact, Dimitri will live another day to protect the reef.

“The shark was acting in his natural environment. I have no ill will toward him and will get back in the water and continue to protect the reef for future generations,” Dimitri said in a comment describing the video on YouTube. He encourages everyone to donate to to protect our reefs and all of the beautiful creatures that inhabit them.
