How Centre County baseball and softball teams did in their latest postseason action

Centre County still has seven teams alive in the baseball and softball postseasons. Next up are multiple district title games and a matchup for one title that features two county teams. Let’s take a look at how the local teams fared and what comes next in the postseason.

Baseball

AA No. 1 seed Bald Eagle defeats No. 5 seed Richland, 3-0

AAA No. 3 seed Philipsburg-Osceola defeats No. 2 seed Central, 18-3

AAAA No. 1 seed Bellefonte defeats No. 2 seed Juniata, 9-1

AAAAAA No. 1 seed State College defeats No. 2 seed Altoona, 9-7

All four local baseball teams won their most recent playoff games and will move on in the postseason.

Bald Eagle earned its second straight shutout victory of the postseason, this time against the Richland Rams. Tyler Serb once again controlled the game from the mound, pitching all seven innings while striking out seven batters. Sophomore Carson Nagle had three hits at the plate, knocking in two of the team’s three runs. The Eagles have qualified for the state tournament after earning one of the top two spots in District 6.

Philipsburg-Osceola lit up the Central Dragons to earn a 15-run victory and will now move on to the District 6 Class AAA finals where they’ll take on Tyrone — who the Mounties defeated in both of their matchups this season. They will also advance to the state tournament after earning a top two spot in the district.

Bellefonte earned the Class AAAA District 6 title with a win over Juniata that featured a great pitching performance from Dominic Capperella. He threw seven innings, only allowing one run while punching out 11 Juniata batters.

State College won the Class AAAAAA District 6 title by winning a back and forth game over Altoona after falling behind 4-2 after three innings.

Softball

AA No. 1 seed Bald Eagle defeats No. 4 seed Marion Center, 4-0

AA No. 2 seed Penns Valley defeats No. 6 seed Southern Huntingdon, 8-4

AAA No. 4 seed Forest Hills defeats No. 8 seed Philipsburg-Osceola, 4-2

AAAA District 6 representative Bellefonte defeats District 8 representative Obama Academy, 27-0

AAAAAA No. 1 seed Mifflin County defeats No. 2 seed State College, 3-2

There will be an all-Centre County Class AA District 6 title game thanks to victories by both Bald Eagle and Penns Valley in the semifinals. Both teams earned four-run wins over Marion Center and Southern Huntingdon, respectively, to set up the matchup. The Eagles and Rams will both advance to the state playoffs by finishing in the top two in the district.

Philipsburg-Osceola was unable to make a surprising run, falling to Forest Hills after knocking off No. 1 seed Central Cambria in the first round.

Bellefonte moves on in its sub-regional, earning a district title, after dominating Obama Academy and will face the representative from District 9 for the right to advance to the state playoffs.

State College’s season came to an end after a close loss to Mifflin County. The Little Lions knotted the score up at two after falling behind 2-0 after three innings, but a sixth inning run sealed the loss for State College.
