EastEnders airs emotional character exit in early iPlayer release

EastEnders spoilers follow from Thursday's episode (March 28), which is streaming now on BBC iPlayer.

EastEnders aired Ben Mitchell's final scenes in the show's latest episode (March 28).

The BBC soap has been airing Ben's exit story throughout the week, after bosses decided to write him out.

The plot has seen Ben's antics in America last year come back to haunt him, when he was arrested for credit card fraud and informed he was facing a prison sentence abroad.

Despite initially planning to flee with Lexi, Ben was ultimately refused bail and sent straight down to his cell.

In Thursday's edition, which is already available to watch on BBC iPlayer, Callum was determined to have a final conversation with Ben regardless, and used his job to his advantage.

This allowed Callum to have the time he needed with his husband, where he gave him some hard home truths about what his actions have meant for their marriage and family.

Callum accused Ben of making everything about him, and leaving Callum feeling like a passenger in their relationship.

He encouraged Ben to do the right thing and plead guilty, reminding him that he still loved him and would be waiting for him with Lexi when he was released.

Ben rejected this idea, urging Callum to free himself from the constraints of their relationship and meet someone else.

Ben also took the opportunity to tell Callum that he never thought he'd love again after his late boyfriend Paul Coker's death and how proud he was to have watched Callum be true to himself over the past few years.

Despite Ben's adamance that their relationship was over, Callum refused to give up and insisted that he wasn't going to allow Ben to push him away.

Callum reiterated how much he loved Ben and promised to be waiting for him when he gets out of prison.

Reaffirming his commitment, Callum used British Sign Language (BSL) – which he had learned when Ben was suffering from hearing loss – to tell Ben that he loved him.

They then shared an emotional final exchange, before Callum walked away and Ben broke down in his cell.

Thursday's episode marks Max Bowden's final scenes in the role. He has played the latest incarnation of Ben since 2019.

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer, where most episodes drop early at 6am ahead of their TV broadcast.
