Faulty lamp likely sparked fire that killed 92-year-old in Coaldale, Alta.

Coaldale RCMP say a faulty electrical lamp likely caused the accidental fire that claimed the life of a 92-year-old woman earlier this year.

Coaldale and District Emergency Services have concluded their investigation into the fatal Jan. 4 incident at a three-storey apartment building, where an elderly woman was rescued from the burning building but later died.

Her cause of death remains under investigation, and conclusions may take some time pending further toxicology tests, police said in a release.

Officials say the incident does not appear to be suspicious at this time.

Fire-smart practices

The fire department is also reminding people to test their smoke alarms weekly and change their batteries at least once a year.

They endorse the "close before you doze" practice, which involves shutting the bedroom door when you go to sleep, so as to create an effective barrier against deadly levels of carbon monoxide, smoke or flames.

Coaldale is a small town in southern Alberta, located approximately 10 kilometres east of Lethbridge along Highway 3.
