5-star recruit reaffirms Clemson football commitment after team’s slow start

Midlothian (Tex.) High School wide receiver and Clemson commit Bryant Wesco ranks as the No. 20 overall recruit in the Class of 2024 and a five-star prospect, per the 247Sports composite.

Amid Clemson football’s struggles, a top incoming recruit took to social media Monday night with a clear message: Don’t even try to flip me.

Five-star 2024 wide receiver recruit Bryant Wesco, who ranks No. 6 at his position and No. 20 nationally, said in a post on the platform X (formerly Twitter) that he remains rock solid in his verbal commitment to the Tigers despite their 4-3 start to the season.

“While I am thankful for all the coaches and schools that recruited me, I am 100% locked in to Clemson,” Wesco said Monday. “My recruitment is closed.”

Wesco, a senior at Midlothian (Tex.) High School, has been verbally committed to Clemson since June. He’s the second-highest ranked recruit in Tigers’ incoming class of 2024, only a few spots behind Jefferson (Ga.) High School linebacker Sammy Brown (No. 14 nationally).

The insinuation of Wesco’s post was clear: As Clemson has struggled to start the 2023 season, most recently blowing a 10-point fourth quarter lead and losing in double overtime at Miami to fall to 4-3- and 2-3 in the ACC, other programs are trying to get Wesco to flip commitments.

But that’s not happening, according to his post.

Wesco also told On3 Sports earlier this week that TCU and Oklahoma were still keeping in touch with him after his Clemson commitment, but it was more “relationship building” since he’s known their position coaches for a while.

“Props to them and how their seasons are going,” Wesco told the website. “But I’m set for Clemson and I let them know that, and they know that.”

Wesco, who plays his high school football about 25 miles from Dallas and has been drawing hype as the sort of game-changing player that could help get Clemson back to its “Wide Receiver U” glory days from earlier this decade.

According to MaxPreps, Wesco (6-2, 170) has caught 36 passes for 619 yards and 13 touchdowns in seven games this season. He’s well on track to set career highs in every category after catching 56 passes for 1,072 yards and 12 scores as a junior.

In a 247Sports scouting report, national analyst Gabe Brooks wrote that Wesco “projects as a high-major receiver prospect who should become an impact player for multiple years” and has the traits and athletic build “that could lead to NFL Draft early-round consideration.”

Coach Dabo Swinney, offensive coordinator Garrett Riley and wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham all played key roles in the successful recruitment of Wesco, who attended Clemson’s home game against FAU in September and will be back in Memorial Stadium next Saturday for Clemson-Notre Dame, per On3 Sports.

Wesco wasn’t the only incoming recruit to publicly show their support for their future program, which has lost three games for the first time since 2010, Dabo Swinney’s second season.

Four-star Lancaster (Tex.) cornerback Corian Gipson, four-star North Cobb (Ga.) running back David Eziomume and three-star Hough (N.C.) kicker Nolan Hauser all posted their own messages of support for the Clemson program Monday.

Clemson currently has 17 players committed in its recruiting class of 2024, which ranks No. 15 nationally in the 247Sports composite rankings and third in the ACC behind Miami and Florida State. Twelve of those 17 commits rank as either four-star or five-star recruits.
