French PM Admits 'Blunder' Over Private Jet

France's Prime Minister has admitted he made "a blunder" by taking a government jet to watch the Champions League final with his two sons in Berlin.

Manuel Valls surprised the majority of voters with the extravagant flight – and caused further controversy by insisting it was a business trip to see the head of UEFA, Michel Platini.

Initially, the 52-year-old had defended his decision to take the private plane, claiming he was entitled to moments of relaxation, and stressing it "did not cost a single euro more" to have his kids on board.

But in a Sunday newspaper, Mr Valls said he had learned a lesson, which came against a backdrop of high unemployment and a struggling economy.

"It was a mistake, a blunder," he told Journal du Dimanche. "I gave the impression to the French people that I had not devoted myself to them. I am sorry."

A few days earlier, Mr Valls attempted to quash the controversy by promising to repay £1,800 – offsetting the cost of taking his young boys on the flight.

Although popular, 75% of French voters polled about the issue said they were "shocked" by their Prime Minister's behaviour, which several national newspapers described as "foul".

Mr Valls, who is originally from Barcelona, had travelled to Berlin on 6 June to watch his team, FC Barcelona, defeat Juventus 3-1.
