Graffiti Summer kicks off in Modesto with plenty of planned events, including the big parade/cruise downtown and on McHenry Avenue, as well as the first show of 2024 for MoBand.
In addition, Congregation Beth Shalom presents a documentary about a Holocaust survivor who lived in Modesto.
These are just some of the events happening in the Modesto region June 1-7.
Graffiti Summer cruise
The North Modesto Kiwanis Club presents its annual parade/cruise, re-creating cruising in Modesto, chronicled by native George Lucas in his 1973 film, “American Graffiti.” The event features 1,000 registered vehicles. Grand marshal is Kiki Rodriguez, one of the founders of the Impala Car Club.

MoBand returns
The Modesto Band of Stanislaus County, known as MoBand, opens its 2024 season with a Graffiti Summer-themed concert, “Cruisin’.” Many people get their spots early by laying down blankets during the day and then enjoy picnics later at the evening concerts.

Walk of Fame
The Legends of the Cruise Walk of Fame Ceremony honors locals during this Graffiti Summer event. This year’s inductees are Raymond Lee, Vito Masellis, Larry Pippin, Pete “Kiki” Rodriguez, Don Wenstrand, Larry Wing and The REGS – Fraternity. Music will follow by Third Party. Before the ceremony, the Legends of the Cruise Park N’ Shine will feature classic cars along 10th, 11th and 12th streets, between J and K streets in Modesto beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Holocaust survivor film
Congregation Beth Shalom presents the documentary “Ursula Lowenbach Foster: We Choose To Live.” The film is part of the Generation to Generation franchise, a documentary series about the Holocaust. This film is about the late Ursula Foster of Modesto. Her son Clifford Lester guides viewers through her journey as a Holocaust survivor, a wife and mother. The movie’s producer, Thomas Biebers, and Lester will offer remarks after the movie, followed by a Q&A.

Bike ‘N’ Trike
The Modesto Children’s Museum will hold a community ride beginning at the museum. The ride will travel through closed streets, along the Virginia Corridor to Roosevelt Park. There will be a celebration at the park with music, summer activities, food and snacks.

Apricot Fiesta
Patterson’s annual celebration of apricots includes a craft fair, food and beer booths, live entertainment, a kids zone and more. There will be a parade beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, with fireworks at dusk.

Creedence tribute
Randy Linder and his band will re-create the hits of Creedence Clearwater Revival at the State Theatre. They’ll play CCR music from 1968 to 1972, along with some of John Fogerty’s solo hits.

Elvis show
“ELVIS: In Person — Starring Matt Stone” brings the music of the King of Rock to the State Theatre. Matt Stone & The Graceland Band were named by Graceland and the Elvis Presley Estate as one of the top Elvis tribute artists, according to the theater’s website.
