Gulliver girls’ water polo wins region title. Plus Cardinal Gibbons, Reagan volleyball and more

The Gulliver Prep girls’ water polo team defeated MAST 20-5 to win a region title and advance to state.

At state, the Raiders (22-1) will play the Raiders of St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday at Belen Jesuit High School.

Against MAST, senior captain Gaby Montalvo led all scoring with 8 goals, 2 assists, 4 steals and 3 earned exclusions. Senior co-captain Giorgia Pascual had 2 goals, 4 steals and 1 assist.

Senior Aria Torretta added 3 goals, 2 assists and 1 steal, and sophomore Reese Rosenthal totaled 3 goals, 2 assists and 2 steals. Seventh grade goalie Sofia Beltran made 3 blocks and recorded 1 steal and 1 assist.

Boys’ volleyball

Cardinal Gibbons (16-3) and Mater Lakes Academy (17-2) continue to impress in boys’ volleyball.

The Chiefs, led by Gabriel Nejad, Daniel Sappia and Thiago Zamprogno, beat Suncost from Riviera Beach and Cypress Bay, and Mater Lakes Academy defeated Coral Gables thanks to Nicholas Aranda and Jesus Montes.

Of note, Western came from behind in a five-set thriller to defeat Hollywood Hills. Down two sets to zero, Somerset Academy Silver Palms-Miami rallied to defeat Everglades Prep-Homestead.

Pompano Beach needed five sets to beat West Broward, and Don Sofer Aventure improved to 11-0 after a come-from-behind win over American Heritage-Plantation.
