Woman and her dog killed by allegedly impaired driver in Oakville

A 51-year-old woman and her dog were struck and killed by an allegedly impaired driver as they walked on a path adjacent to a major road in Oakville on Thursday, Halton police say.

The collision happened around 2:15 p.m. on Lakeshore Road East near Burgundy Drive, police said in a news release issued in the early morning hours on Friday.

According to police, a reconstruction of the deadly incident suggested that the driver was initially headed eastbound on Lakeshore before he left the roadway on the south side and continued on eastward.

The driver hit the victim and her dog on the pedestrian pathway before striking a decorative stone post and returning to the road, police said.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 58-year-old driver was arrested and charged with impaired driving causing death.
