What You Need to Know About 'Shrek 5'Dreamworks

Anyone in need of mood boost? Because we potentially have the best news we've heard all year: Shrek 5 is officially happening!!!! And no, we can't contain ourselves.

Yep, on July 9, more than 23 years after the original movie was released, it was announced that we can now expect a new film featuring our favorite ogres (and donkey!) to hit theatres in 2026. And honestly, is it too soon to book movie tickets?

If you're just as excited as we are to head back to the swamp, here's what you need to know about the new Shrek movie.

When was Shrek 5 confirmed?

On July 9, 2024, Dreamworks confirmed a fifth Shrek movie was in the works called...Shrek 5. It's got a ring to it, we have to say!

Posting on its official social media account, the production company penned, "Not too Far, Far Away… @Shrek 5 is coming to theatres on July 1, 2026 with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz."

However, the news was technically first shared by Eddie Murphy (who plays Donkey in the franchise) earlier this year. Back in June, the actor told Collider he had already recorded his part for the new film and also dropped the bombshell there would also be a Donkey spinoff movie.

"We started doing Shrek 4 or [Shrek] 5 months ago. I did this, I recorded the first act, and we'll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up. Shrek is coming out, and Donkey's gonna have his own movie. We're gonna do Donkey as well. So we're gonna do a Shrek, and we're doing a Donkey [movie]," he explained.

Two new Shrek universe movies? Oh, we're so ready.

Who is in the cast?

The good news doesn't stop there, as all three of the original cast members—Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz—are all confirmed to reprise their roles as Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona, respectively.

So far, it hasn't been confirmed whether Antonio Banderas will reprise his role as Puss in Boots, but here's hoping he does. 😭

What will the movie be about?

The most recent Shrek movie, Shrek Forever After, which was released in 2010, saw Shrek in domesticated bliss with Fiona and their triplets. However, he then got tricked into signing a pact with the evil Rumpelstiltskin to trade a day from his childhood for a day as a real ogre.

He unknowingly signs away the day he was born and much of the movie is spent in an alternative universe, where Shrek never existed. Skip to the end of the movie and a kiss from Fiona saves the day and turns everything back to normal, and Shrek realizes how happy he is with his normal life.

Given this is how the fourth movie ended, it's hard to know what direction the next one will go in as nothing has yet been revealed. Will the triplets be all grown up? Will Shrek and Fiona be grandparents? Guess we'll have to wait to find out!

When will Shrek 5 be released?

Get ready to clear your schedules, as it's officially been confirmed Shrek 5 will be released in cinemas on July 1, 2026, 25 years after the original movie was released.

See you at the swamp.
