Prep football recap: Homedale extends streak. Boise wins in OT. Owyhee rallies in last minute

The streak continues.

In a battle of unbeatens, Homedale kept its place atop the 3A Snake River Valley on Friday night with a dramatic, hard-fought win over Weiser.

The Trojans needed just six plays to go 97 yards for the winning touchdown in a 21-14 home victory, extending their winning streak over conference opponents to 30 games and giving Homedale the inside track for its sixth straight league title.

With 37 seconds left, Dillon Fine intercepted a Kolin Cook pass to preserve the win – getting payback for a second-half pass of his that Cook intercepted. Fine, the team’s quarterback, also was a hero offensively, throwing the game-winning TD pass to Rafael Cuenca with 1:34 left and accounting for 220 of the team’s 361 yards of offense.

No. 2 Homedale (7-0, 3-0) staked itself to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter with touchdowns on its first two drives. Fine had a 52-yard TD pass to Luke Henry, and the Trojans also got a 4-yard touchdown run by Andrew Marston.

No. 3 Weiser (6-1, 2-1) cut the lead to 14-7 when Cook picked off Fine and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown midway through the third quarter. The Wolverines evened the score in the fourth quarter with about 10 minutes left when Kaleb Grove capped a 65-yard drive with a 1-yard TD run.

That set the stage for Fine and Homedale, who took possession with 4:59 remaining and used up 3 ½ minutes to go nearly the length of the field for the score. Fine hit Cuenca, and the receiver took his only reception in the game to the end zone.

Fine completed 7-of-14 passes for 162 yards and two scores, and also rushed 11 times for 52 yards. Marston had 90 yards on 18 carries for the Trojans, and Henry had four catches for 85 yards.

Homedale was fairly effective in bottling up the Wolverines’ high-powered rushing attack, which got 180 yards on 33 attempts. Weiser entered averaging 232 yards per game. Grove led the team with 102 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.

BOISE 29, BORAH 28, OT

Borah opted to go for two points and the win in overtime. But Boise’s Ryan Hughes and Peter Costello combined to stop running back Jevon Nelson in the backfield to complete a wild, come-from-behind win for the Brave on Thursday night at Dona Larsen Park.

The win guaranteed Boise (6-1, 4-1 5A SIC River) will finish with a winning record for the first time since 2008, and it gave the Brave their most victories in a single season since 1992 (seven).

Boise forced overtime when sophomore quarterback Trevor Schoolfield hit Eli Rich for a 16-yard touchdown pass with 1:06 left in the fourth quarter. The Brave struck first in overtime as Jordan McDonald hauled in a leaping, 10-yard TD on the first play.

Nelson answered with a 10-yard touchdown run on second down, breaking through four would-be tacklers. But Boise denied him on the do-or-die two-point conversion.

Nelson ran for 191 yards, and Trevor McKenna finished with 4.5 sacks for Borah (4-3, 2-3). Individual stats for Boise were not reported.

Brekke also had a 40-yard touchdown in the second quarter, and Nathan Gamette kicked a 26-yard field goal for Owyhee (6-2, 4-2 5A SIC River), which led 10-0 entering the fourth quarter.

Kuna rallied with 14 straight points on an Austin Lattimer 8-yard touchdown run and a Mario D’Orazio 11-yard score. But the Kavemen (3-4, 1-4) couldn’t make the last-second stop to pull the upset.

Nampa (0-6), which led 24-21 entering the fourth quarter, rushed for 388 yards and punted only once but was 0-for-3 on fourth-down attempts. Senior Josh Peterson did most of the damage, running for a startling 313 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries.
