Maja Paderewska's brother, Jarek, charged in her death

The RCMP's Integrated Homicide Investigation Team says Jarek Paderewski, 27, has been charged with second degree murder in the death of his sister, Maja Paderewska, who was found dead in a Coquitlam townhome Sunday.

The body of the 33-year-old was discovered at around 3 p.m. PT after paramedics were called to the residence in the 2900 block of Panorama Drive.

Students of North Surrey Secondary School are taking to social media, mourning the loss of their beloved teacher.

Former NSSS student Tanu Gill said Paderewska would often stay late at the school to mentor students.

"I just went to her as a friend, always asking her for advice of what to do with life. She was always there for everybody," said Gill.

"If you ever needed something, you could instantly go to Miss Paderewska. You know she's always there after school, during lunch and you could talk to her about anything."

Sgt. Adam MacIntosh said Jarek Paderewski, who lives in Coquitlam, was not known to police prior to being arrested following the death of his sister. He was arrested at the scene.

MacIntosh said there are still a lot of unanswered questions.

"The motive for this homicide is not yet known and IHIT continues working with the Integrated Forensic Identification Section and the Coquitlam RCMP to collect evidence at the residence where the homicide occurred," he said.

MacIntosh said Paderewski lives at the townhouse with his parents, but his sister did not.
