Jerry Seinfeld wanted Daniel Day-Lewis for a “There Will Be Blood–”esque role in his Pop-Tarts movie

There will be... sugar? Jerry Seinfeld has revealed that he envisioned a special version of his Pop-Tarts movie that involved Daniel Day-Lewis playing a role that evoked his 2007 Western epic There Will Be Blood.

The star and director of Netflix's upcoming comedy Unfrosted — which centers on cereal rivals Kellogg's and Post as they race to create the ultimate breakfast pastry — shared the tidbit during a Wednesday night appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

“We have a sugar drug lord who controls all the world’s sugar. His name is El Sucre. I wanted Daniel Day-Lewis to play it like Daniel Plainview from There Will Be Blood," Seinfeld told Kimmel, referencing Day-Lewis' Oscar-winning turn as a ruthless oilman during Southern California's oil boom in the late 19th century.

Though he intended to ask Day-Lewis to take on the part, Seinfeld admitted, "I never called him. I should have called him."

When Kimmel noted that Day-Lewis has been retired from show business (his last film was 2017's Phantom Thread, also from There Will Be Blood director Paul Thomas Anderson), Seinfeld quipped, “If there’s anything to come out of retirement for, it’s a Pop-Tart movie. It would have been great.”

Day-Lewis or no Day-Lewis, Unfrosted — a very loose interpretation of the Pop-Tarts origin story — boasts a starry cast that includes Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, Hugh Grant, Peter Dinklage, and Christian Slater.

Sharing the unorthodox influences behind Unfrosted, like The Godfather and The Right Stuff, Seinfeld told the Associated Press in a recent interview that its creative team even considered placing a notable There Will Be Blood line in the movie with zero context given.

"At one point, I was going to say, 'I’ll bury you under the ground, Eli,' from There Will Be Blood, and we weren’t even going to explain it," Seinfeld said. "The character’s name wasn’t Eli."
