King Charles's Doctors "Remain Positive" About His Recovery

Since Buckingham Palace announced King Charles's cancer diagnosis in early February, there have been scant updates on the King's health and recovery. Today, however, the Palace announced the British monarch would be returning to public duties. "His Majesty The King will shortly return to public-facing duties after a period of treatment and recuperation following his recent cancer diagnosis," the Palace said in a statement.

Though Charles is returning to a schedule of public engagements, the news does not mean his cancer treatment has finished. "His Majesty's treatment programme will continue, but doctors are sufficiently pleased with the progress made so far that The King is now able to resume a number of public-facing duties," a Palace spokesperson said. "Forthcoming engagements will be adapted where necessary to minimise any risks to His Majesty’s continued recovery."

The spokesperson added "it is too early to say" how long Charles's treatment will continue, but emphasized that his "medical team are very encouraged by the progress made so far and remain positive about The King's continued recovery." The Palace will not be sharing what type of cancer Charles has, or what type of treatment he has been receiving.

Meanwhile, the royals have given no indication on when Charles's daughter-in-law, Kate Middleton, who is undergoing her own treatment for cancer, will return to royal duties. Like the King, the Princess of Wales will not be sharing her specific cancer diagnosis, but did reveal she is undergoing "preventative chemotherapy." (Likely referring to what's commonly known as adjuvant cancer therapy.)

King Charles's upcoming schedule of engagements remains in flux, and all his plans remain subject to his "doctors' advice nearer the time, with appropriate adaptations made where necessary to minimise any risks to His Majesty’s continued recovery," according to the Palace. In addition, though planning is underway for engagements for the rest of the year, the Palace clarified "nothing can be confirmed or guaranteed at this stage."
