Before he was a leading man, Fort Worth’s Leon Bridges washed dishes in between open mics

Known for his soulful voice and music, Fort Worth crooner Leon Bridges can now add leading actor to his impressive resume.

Bridges, 34, was born in Atlanta but raised in Fort Worth. Between open mics, Bridges washed dishes at Cowtown’s Del Frisco’s Grille until he skyrocketed to fame in 2015 after his debut album, “Coming Home.”

The “Beyond” singer stars in “The Young Wife,” which is now available to rent or buy on all digital platforms.

Tayarisha Poe wrote and directed the movie, which also stars Kiersey Clemons, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Aya Cash and Judith Light.

The film’s synopsis reads, “On her wedding day, all that stands between a young woman and marital bliss is surviving the chaos and expectations of family and friends, each intensifying her spiraling panic”.

Bridges stars as the husband-to-be aptly named “River,” the same moniker bestowed on one of his songs from “Coming Home.”

“The Young Wife” is Bridges’ third film, after appearing as himself in 2018’s “Ocean’s Eight” and in “First Man” as real-life poet/singer Gil Scott-Heron. Bridges also filmed scenes for 2017’s “Detroit,” but was cut from the finished project.

Bridges told the Hollywood Reporter that he turned down his role in “The Young Wife” twice, only circling back after learning that he didn’t have to audition.

“It was an opportunity for me to do little bit more of a significant role,” Bridges said.

“The Young Wife” had its world premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin in March 2023.

Over a year later, the film finally had its public release on May 31. Viewers can rent or buy the movie on all digital platforms such as AppleTV and Prime Video.

Now with his meatiest film role to date and three albums in the rearview, Bridges is working on his fourth record.

Bridges has been documenting his journey with the fourth album on social media, sharing that he’s been in Mexico making it. No release date or title for the forthcoming album has been shared.

Nevertheless, fans only have to wait a few more week before hearing new music from Bridges. The Fort Worth crooner is on the soundtrack for the movie “Twisters,” with a song titled “Chrome Cowgirl”, which releases on July 19.
