Muhammad Ali's best punches, greatest moments

It's a tragic day in the sports world as former world heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali died Friday at the age of 74.

Ali suffered from Parkinson's disease since the 1980s and was hospitalized Thursday due to respiratory issues. His condition worsened into Friday as family members travelled to be by his side.

Ali will be remembered as one of the world's most celebrated athletes. His worldwide fame stemmed not only from performances in the ring but from his ability to leave an everlasting imprint on a community of people.

In honour of the boxing great's life, these are five memorable Muhammad Ali moments that will never be forgotten.

1. Fight of the Century:

On March 8, 1971 history would be made as Ali and Joe Frazier, two undefeated boxers, came head-to-head to fight for the heavyweight title at Madison Square Garden. After a strenuous 15 rounds, a unanimous decision declared Frazier's defeat of Ali. The fight between the two is remembered as the "Fight of the Century."

2. Super Fight II:

Ali and Frazier met again but this time in a non-title match. The fight was held on January 28, 1974, at Madison Square Garden where Ali was projected as the slight favourite to win. He did just that by boxing his way to a unanimous decision.

3. Thrilla in Manila:

The third and final meeting between Ali and Frazier was on Oct. 1, 1975 in Manila, Philippines, which concluded the three-bout trilogy. Ali won the series 2-1. The bout is still ranked as one of the best moments in sports history. Ali contributed to the fight's name, as he would frequently rhyme about being a,"killa and a thrilla and a chilla, when I get that gorilla in Manila."

4. Inspirational Speech:

When a young fan asked Ali, "what are you going to do when you retire from boxing?" he presented the world with an unforgettable answer. During the inspirational response he discusses the importance of the purpose of life and life after death.

5. Hollywood Walk of Fame:

Ali was offered a "Hollywood Walk of Fame" star but initially rejected the offer stating, "I bear the name of our beloved Prophet Muhammad, and it is impossible that I allow people to trample over his name." His response granted him the option of putting his star on the wall. His is the only star not on the ground.

The athletes of today were also taken back by the tragic news of Ali's passing:

Family members took the time to share their memories and love with the world.

As the world remembers one of the greatest athletes and celebrates the legacy of Muhammad Ali's life. "The man who views the world at 50 the same as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life."
