Suns coach Monty Williams reportedly agrees to long-term contract extension
The Phoenix Suns locked down their Coach of the Year.
Monty Williams reportedly agreed to a long-term contract extension to remain with the team, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed, but Williams had just two years left on his initial contract before the Suns gave him an extension.
Phoenix has been one of the best teams in the NBA since Williams took over in 2019. The Suns are 149-78 during Williams' first three seasons and 21-14 in the two postseason appearances, including an NBA Finals run in 2021 that ended with a 4-2 series loss to the Milwaukee Bucks.
Williams won NBA Coach of The Year for the 2021-22 season a year after barely losing the award to New York Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau. Williams was, however, named coach of the year over the past two seasons by the National Basketball Coach's Association.
Suns guard Devin Booker has also become one of the best players in the league under Williams' direction. Booker was named an All-Star all three seasons with Williams and averaged 26.3 points per game, 5.2 assists per game and 4.5 rebounds per game since 2019. Former No. 1 overall pick DeAndre Ayton, who recently returned to the team on a $133 million max contract, has also blossomed under Williams' coaching with 16.3 points and 10.6 rebounds per game over the past three years.
