The Veil’s Yumna Marwan Used a Breast Pump on a Frozen Mountain in Turkey and Therefore Is Our Hero
Hulu’s The Veil is a spy drama full of intense action and international intrigue. As such, it filmed all over the world, with location shoots taking place in Paris, London and other far-flung locales.
Which is how Yumna Marwan (Sky’s Little Birds), who stars opposite Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) in the limited series and who was a new mom at the time of filming, found herself using a breast pump on a frigid day of shooting in a snowy region of Turkey.

Let’s back up a minute. The Veil — the two-episode premiere of which is available to stream today; single episodes will follow weekly — follows Moss’ Imogen Salter, a highly successful MI6 agent fond of going rogue, and Marwan’s Adilah El Idrissi, a woman rumored to be involved with a terrorist organization. In the first episode, Imogen encounters Adilah in a refugee camp near the border between Turkey and Syria; most of their Episode 1 scenes together take place against a backdrop of gorgeous, if not particularly temperate, snow-covered mountains.
On a scale of “ice cube” to “walk-in freezer,” it was “Walk-in freezer, for sure,” Marwan tells TVLine, grimacing. Which leads us to the breast pump — we’ll allow her to explain.
TVLINE | So tell me what was going on, costume-wise. Were you packed down with those hand-warmer things?
YUMNA MARWAN | Yeah. Like, that’s how hard it was. It was so difficult to be up there on the mountain. I think that was the hardest part of the shoot, for sure. And I was breastfeeding at the time, and I would be pumping, and I would leave the bags out in the snow [Laughs] because I didn’t even have to use a freezer, you know? It was freezing.
TVLINE | First of all, you’re my hero. Second, just the idea of taking off all those layers…
Oh my gosh. And finding that opening? [Laughs] Yeah.
TVLINE | Which is not fun under normal circumstances. OK, so you get a medal. Where did you shoot those scenes?
That was in Central Turkey on a mountain. So, it would actually take us a long time to go there and we had to get everybody up every single day and then come back down.
