Winnipeg Muslims celebrate Eid at Assiniboine Park

The conflict in Gaza was on the minds of Winnipeg Muslims who marked Eid al-Fitr on Monday with food and family fun at Assiniboine Park.

Hundreds of people of all ages gathered at the park to celebrate Eid, a three-day holiday that concludes the holy month of Ramadan.

"It's the greatest feeling, seeing all these people here," said Hussain Guisti of the Zubaidah Tallab Foundation, which organized the event along with Bilal Masjid.

Taib Soufi and his wife, Rachel Leila Soufi, said they are happy to be celebrating Eid with friends and family.

"I think it's fantastic that there are, in fact, many different communities that make one big community," said Rachel.

Guisti said even with the festive mood, he knows many Muslims are thinking about the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas that has killed at least 1,072 Palestinians and 52 Israeli soldiers in recent weeks.

"People are sad," he said. "Children, they're not aware of what's going on, but the adults do have their hearts with Gaza."
