Canadian embassy in Washington briefly evacuated after suspicious package found

Update: CNN reports the evacuation order has been lifted and people are returning to the building.

Canada's embassy in Washington, D.C., has been evacuated after a suspicious package was discovered early Friday morning.

Embassy spokesperson Chris Plunkett told Reuters that the Secret Service was contacted immediately after the package was found inside the embassy's mail room.

According to reports, the package was an envelope containing a white substance.

Washington police said roads around the building had also cleared as a precaution.

Washington's Canadian embassy is located on Pennsylvania Avenue, a short distance from the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, the Library of Congress and the White House.

The suspicious package investigation comes one day after Canadian authorities were called to a Parliamentary building in Ottawa.

The Globe and Mail reported that emergency personnel responded to a call from the Confederation Building, which houses Members of Parliament offices.

Ottawa police said a package was seized for investigation.
