Black Panther star Angela Bassett to receive special Oscar award

Black Panther star Angela Bassett will receive an Honorary Oscar later this year from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The actress, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, will receive the statuette at the Governors' Awards (via Variety).

The Honorary Award recognises "extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or outstanding service to the Academy".

"Across her decades-long career, Angela Bassett has continued to deliver transcendent performances that set new standards in acting," Academy President, Janet Yang, said.

Mel Brooks and Carol Littleton will also receive the award, whilst Michelle Satter will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Awards. The Governors' Awards will take place in Los Angeles on November 18. Last year's awards went to Euzhan Palcy, Diane Warren, Peter Weir and Michael J Fox.

Bassett has also starred in What's Love Got to Do with It, Boyz n the Hood, Malcolm X, American Horror Story, 9-1-1 and the Has Fallen film series. Her role as Ramonda also stretched to Avengers: Endgame.

It was recently revealed that Anthony Mackie, who plays Sam Wilson in the MCU, initially wanted to be cast as T'Challa in Black Panther, with the actor reportedly writing to the studio to outline his interest.

"I had been contacting Marvel a lot about Black Panther. I had written them letters. I was trying to find a way to make them make Black Panther. And I wanted to be Black Panther because growing up I f**king loved Black Panther," he said.

Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever are streaming on Disney+.
