Casey Bloys Gets New Five-Year Contract At HBO, HBO Max

Casey Bloys, the hitmaker head of content at HBO and HBO Max is getting a new five-year contract from parent Warner Bros. Discovery.

The newly forged media conglom has been settling its executive slate and direction under company CEO David Zaslav. Some have left. Others close to Zaslav have remained to help him oversee the new entity. The Bloys’ news comes a week after the premium network and streaming service under his steady hand secured 140 Emmy nominations.

Deadline confirmed that Bloys’ previous deal expires sometime in late 2023/early 2024 but is superseded by the new contract that starts around now and runs for the next five years. Bloys, who has been in his current post for seven years, reports directly to Zaslav as the new chief has always worked with fewer corporate layers..

Late last week, WBD announced new contracts for two other key executives — CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels (from July 11, 2022 through July 10, 2026), and chief revenue and strategy officer Bruce Campbell (July 9, 2022 to July 8, 2025).

Back to to Emmy nominations, HBO’s Succession led the pack with 25 nominations. The White Lotus got 20 and Barry, Hacks and Euphoria were well recognized. Bloys, who is nothing if not gracious, often mentions his key collaborators, executives who have been with him for years, including Francesca Orsi [EVP Drama], Sarah Aubrey [Head of Original Content, HBO Max], Amy Gravitt and Nina Rosenstein [EVPs, Programming] and Lisa Heller and Nancy Abraham [EVPs, Documentary].

Overall, Warner Bros. Discovery scored 155 Emmy noms adding in Discovery+ and CNN.

The newly forged media conglom has been setting out its executive slate and corporate direction under Zaslav. who closed Discovery’s pricey acquisition of Warner Media from AT&T in April. It’s been a tumultuous time with sudden, broad industry jitters around streaming’s ultimate profitability, and a wave of ongoing layoffs to restructure and streamline any top-heavy reporting structure and ultimately cut a promised $3 billion in costs. WBD has also made a few high-profile hires, however, including Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy as co-chairpersons and CEOs of Warner Bros. Pictures.

As Zaslav surveys his domain, HBO, luckily for the channel is a standout. “This is my seventh Emmy season for HBO and second at HBO Max. The one thing that you can’t control is who your corporate parent is. We went through AT&T and now with Warner Bros. Discovery,” Bloys recently told Deadline after the Emmy haul. “But you can always just focus on the shows and keep your head down and do the work and continue to try and do the best shows possible. That’s what we can control and that’s what this team has done brilliantly.”

Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon comes out August 21. Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, it’s set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, focusing on House Targaryen.
