“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” Deleted Scene: Chimps Take New Heights in Thrilling Sequence (Exclusive)

Owen Teague, Lydia Peckham and Travis Jeffery star as chimpanzees in ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’

In Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, apes climb to new heights.

The latest installment of the Planet of the Apes franchise, set in an ape-dominant Earth decades after 2017's War for the Planet of the Apes, included plenty of epic action sequences, heroism in the face of tyranny, and high-flying thrills.

In a deleted scene shared exclusively with PEOPLE, those thrills climb even higher as it follows Owen Teague as Noa, Lydia Peckham as Soona, and Travis Jeffery as Anaya, all chimps who can’t help but monkey around.

The opening sequence in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes introduces audiences to the feisty trio, on a mission in their overgrown valley home to bring back to their village eagle eggs for future training.

As with the trilogy of Andy Serkis–led Planet of the Apes films before it, director Wes Ball and screenwriter Josh Friedman’s new installment takes advantage of special effects company Wētā FX's ability to transfer human actors’ real expressions and movements onto primates that end up feeling vividly human-like.

As the clip shows, Teague, Peckham and Jeffery were outfitted with motion-capture suits, cameras and dots on their faces while filming.

They also, as Teague, 25, explained to PEOPLE, utilized their six weeks of “ape school” training. “I don't want people to see me on screen,” he said in May just before the movie’s release. “I want them to see the character.”

The film’s motion-capture technology, he continued, “is the most effective way of doing that because when people talk about Noa or go and see his story, they're not thinking about me. So it's purely an experience of the character's journey.”

Noa’s journey takes him out of his idyllic valley when his friends and family are captured by the apes working for ruling bonobo Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand).

On the way, he befriends orangutan Raka (Peter Macon) and human “Nova” (Freya Allan), eventually facing off with the greedy Proximus Caesar, his human advisor Trevathan (William H. Macy) and more.

As for how Teague and his fellow actors playing apes conveyed such accurate ape-like behaviors, he said, “A lot of it comes down to the anatomy… You gotta think about how awkward it is to move on two legs. One thing that really helped me was thinking about the fact that I have hands on my feet. Instead of heels, you've got palms, essentially, and thumbs.”

Weeks of filming in character, he joked, meant the cast “needed human school afterwards.”

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is on digital July 9, then available on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD Aug. 27
