“The Umbrella Academy” season 4 trailer reveals Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally's mysterious characters

And they're out to solve a long-running mystery: "That tentacle boy is the key to understanding all the timelines!"

The biggest mysteries in The Umbrella Academy are about to be answered. After all, season 4 is the final season of the Netflix superhero show (based on the comic book series of the same name by Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba), and the new trailer for the upcoming release promises to leave no stone unturned.

First of all, the trailer finally gives viewers a look at the new characters played by husband-and-wife acting duo Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally. Their characters are married in the show as well, and even share the same phonetic name: He is Dr. Gene Thibedeau, and she is Dr. Jean Thibedeau. In addition to their doctorates, they appear to be rabble-rousers of some kind, and Offerman in particular is rocking some gnarly sideburns.

When we last saw the Hargreeves family — Luther (Tom Hopper), Diego (David Castaneda), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Klaus (Robert Sheehan), Number Five (Aidan Gallagher), Ben (Justin H. Min), and Viktor (Eliot Page) — at the end of season 3, they had been stripped of their superpowers and placed into some new reality by their adoptive father, Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore).

Based on the footage in both this trailer and the previous one, it doesn't feel like a spoiler to say at least some of the team eventually get their powers back. But the Hargreeves siblings aren't the only ones who know something is wrong with their reality.

"The world we live in is one phony-baloney lie," Offerman's Dr. Thibedeau declares over a slideshow of photos from the Umbrella Academy's past as child superheroes.

Which brings us to the next big mystery that season 4 promises to answer: How, exactly, did Ben die back in the day? The tentacle-powered brother was dead when the show started, mourned by all but still visible only to the medium Klaus. Then Ben came back to life in season 3, thanks to an alternate timeline where he was a member of the rival Sparrow Academy. That version of Ben is still with the team, but the question of how his original self died could end up being the key to saving the world one last time. The thing is, none of his siblings remember the exact circumstances. Intriguing!

"That tentacle boy is the key to understanding all the timelines," Thibedeau says.

Viktor puts it even more bluntly: "Ben, there's something happening to you, and it's only going to get worse. You're on pace to end the world in 48 hours."

The unveiling of the final Umbrella Academy trailer comes on the heels of a Rolling Stone report last month accusing showrunner Steve Blackman of "toxic, bullying, manipulative, and retaliatory behavior" on the show, citing anonymous sources and an internal HR complaint. Blackman has denied all the allegations, with a spokesperson calling them "entirely untrue" and "completely absurd." Netflix has not publicly commented on the article or its claims.

The Umbrella Academy season 4 premieres Aug. 8 on Netflix. Watch the new trailer above.
